ECMAScript 2026 Ratified: Temporal API and Deeply Immutable Records & Tuples Arrive
TC39 has officially ratified the ECMAScript 2026 language standard, permanently solving JavaScript date-handling woes with Temporal and introducing primitive value equality for compound data structures.
The ECMA General Assembly has approved ECMAScript 2026, introducing two of the most eagerly anticipated features in JavaScript's thirty-year history: the Temporal API and Records & Tuples.
The Temporal API officially supersedes the flawed legacy Date object, providing timezone-aware, nanosecond-precision date arithmetic:
// Modern ECMAScript 2026 Temporal API
const instant = Temporal.Now.instant();
const zonedDateTime = instant.toZonedDateTimeISO('America/New_York');
const nextQuarter = zonedDateTime.add({ months: 3 });
Meanwhile, Records (#{ x: 1, y: 2 }) and Tuples (#[1, 2, 3]) bring deep immutability and structural equality by value to JavaScript, fundamentally eliminating subtle reference-equality bugs in UI rendering libraries.
