NIST Officially Releases Post-Quantum Cryptography FIPS 203, 204, and 205 Standards
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has finalized official federal standards for quantum-resistant encryption algorithms ML-KEM, ML-DSA, and SLH-DSA.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has finalized its primary federal standards for post-quantum cryptography, concluding a historic eight-year global competition to secure digital communications against future quantum computer attacks.
The newly ratified Federal Information Processing Standards include:
- FIPS 203 (ML-KEM): Module-Lattice-Based Key-Encapsulation Mechanism (derived from CRYSTALS-Kyber) for general public-key encryption and TLS handshakes.
- FIPS 204 (ML-DSA): Module-Lattice-Based Digital Signature Algorithm (derived from CRYSTALS-Dilithium) for digital certificates and software signing.
- FIPS 205 (SLH-DSA): Stateless Hash-Based Digital Signature Algorithm (derived from SPHINCS+) as a mathematical backup algorithm.
Financial institutions, government agencies, and web browsers are immediately instructed to begin phased rollouts replacing legacy RSA-2048 and Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman implementations.
