The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has officially released the finalized Federal Information Processing Standards for post-quantum cryptography: FIPS 203 (ML-KEM), FIPS 204 (ML-DSA), and FIPS 205 (SLH-DSA). The announcement signals the immediate retirement timeline for RSA and standard Elliptic Curve signatures across government, defense, and enterprise networks.
A Historic Shift in Global Cryptography
For more than thirty years, global public-key infrastructure has relied on mathematical problems (discrete logarithms and prime integer factorization) that are easily solved by Shor’s quantum algorithm. The new FIPS standards replace these structures with structured lattice mathematics and stateless hash trees that remain intractable for both classical supercomputers and quantum processors.
Implementation Mandates and Timeline
Under federal guidelines, critical infrastructure providers and federal contractors must begin deploying hybrid quantum-safe TLS ciphers immediately, with full phase-out of legacy RSA key exchange required by 2030. Major cloud providers and browser vendors have confirmed native support for ML-KEM in their autumn release schedules.
