WHATWG Finalizes OPFS v2 with Shared Byte-Range File Locks for Web Workers
The Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group has released the OPFS v2 standard, enabling concurrent SQLite access across multiple background web workers.
The WHATWG browser standards consortium has ratified the Origin Private File System (OPFS) Version 2 specification, introducing fine-grained byte-range advisory locks for virtual file handles.
Previously, OPFS restricted access to an active file handle to a single dedicated Web Worker via FileSystemSyncAccessHandle. With OPFS v2, multiple concurrent workers can safely read and write to the same virtual disk file simultaneously, allowing web-based SQLite and DuckDB engines to handle high-throughput analytical queries in browser tabs.
