PostgreSQL 18 Promotes UUIDv7 as Default Primary Key Recommendation Over UUIDv4
The PostgreSQL Global Development Group has added native UUIDv7 generation functions, citing 35% higher B-tree insertion speeds compared to random UUIDv4 identifiers.
The PostgreSQL Global Development Group has published release notes for PostgreSQL 18, officially introducing built-in native functions for RFC 9562 Version 7 Universally Unique Identifiers (UUIDv7).
Because UUIDv7 embeds a high-resolution millisecond Unix timestamp at the front of its 128-bit payload, primary key indices maintain natural monotonic ordering. Database administrators report up to 35% improvements in transactional write throughput and a 40% reduction in B-tree index fragmentation compared to traditional pseudo-random UUIDv4 keys.
