The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) WebGPU Working Group has published the finalized recommendation for extended 16-bit floating-point (FP16) compute shaders and subgroup matrix operations in WebGPU.
Unlocking Near-Native Client-Side ML Performance
The standardized FP16 and subgroup extensions allow WebAssembly and JavaScript runtimes to execute quantized tensor operations up to 3.5x faster than previous browser implementations. Web developers can now run multi-billion parameter language models, real-time voice synthesis, and image generation directly on client devices without streaming data to cloud servers.
